Off To War

There is this lady from love she ran
For she didn't want to have an affair.
But then she met this nice young man
Who for her he might care.

At first she didn't know what to expect,
For she ran from love before.
Then this young man showed her respect
And she didn't run anymore.

She enjoys talking about their first date
When he took her out to dance.
It was a night that turned out great,
It was a night of romance.

She told of this man to her mom and dad,
Then brought him home for them to meet.
They were pleased with him,
They said they thought he was neat.

It was after dating over a year
When they decided to tie the knot.
They treated each other so dear
And loved each other a lot.

Their families got along alright
And everything looked fine.
Their future seemed so bright
With her pregnant a sign.

Then they received some news in the mail
This news made her nervous.
It was on her face she looked so pale,
He was to report for military service.

He respected his country's choice
And off to war he was sent.
There was sadness in his voice.
When away from his wife he went.

Next he was on a boat in a bay,
Stationed in Vietnam.
He wished he was back in the USA,
Instead of hearing bomb after bomb.

It was in this nasty war,
That was fought without passion,
It was right there on the shore,
Where he became missing in action.

When the news got back to his wife
That her husband could be dead,
She feared for his life
And prayers to Jesus she said.

Days and months went past
And for her husband she mourn.
Then the day came at last
When the child she was carrying was born.

She prayed for the man she married,
Praying someday he'll come home.
They couldn't find him so he couldn't be buried,
And with sadness through the house she roam.

She loved her brand new baby
It gave her something to live for.
They said her husband's alive maybe
For they have found missing soldiers before.

Then she was told something new
They heard of survivors from that shore.
It was presumed it could be true
He might be a prisoner of war.

She felt this was an outrage
Why couldn't they tell her more.
She thought why at such a young age
Were men in the Marine Corps.

Across the floor she paced
With tears in her eyes.
It was sadness she faced
While for her husband she cries.

Then one day she got the news
That her husband is alive.
That's the day she took her blues
And prayed he would arrive.

Soon after that he walked in the door
He was a sight for sore eyes.
He survived that nasty war
But we lost many brave guys.

Memories of those days will never fade,
He fought where he was told.
That's how this country's made,
Of Men who will fight so bold.
